How to Quilt With Yarn
Yarn tying is one of the easiest ways to quilt. It keeps the layers of the quilt together quicker than traditional quilting. Yarn also adds a colorful touch to the finished product. Yarn tying is a common way to finish small quilts, such as for a baby blanket.

1
Lay your quilt bottom face down on a work surface, followed by the batting and quilt top face up. Run a loose basting stitch through all layers in an "X" from corner to corner. Stretch the quilt in a quilt rack.
-
2
Thread a darning needle with yarn. Choose yarn that either contrasts with or matches the quilt top.

3
Start from the top of the quilt and pass the needle straight down through all layers. Sew back up so the needle comes up 1/4 inch from the start of the stitch.
-
4
Trim the yarn so you have two 1-inch ends on the top of the quilt, each 1/4 inch from the other. Tie the ends together in a square knot and trim the ends to between 1/4 and 1/2 inch each.
-
5
Space your ties as desired. Use the pattern of the quilt to designate where to tie the yarn, or use a grid pattern where each knot is about 2 inches from those around it. Once the entire quilt is tied, bind it as desired.
