      Examine the split limb. If it is broken, it needs to be removed.

      Cut away most of the foliage on the end of the split branch to reduce the weight and help the tree redirect its energy to repairing the branch.

      Cut back any torn bark until you reach healthy and fresh wood with a utility knife.

      Hoist the split branch so the pieces are touching one another. Use a winch or block and tackle to secure the pieces by placing it about 6 to 8 feet above the split.

      Drill a hole through both sides of the split. Insert a threaded screw rod into the holes. Use two or more rods for larger splits.
