How to Smooth Modeling Clay

How to Smooth Modeling Clay thumbnail
Many techniques are involved in modeling clay.

Once you have a hardened clay sculpture, you might think that adding a new area and smoothing it out would not be possible. However, if you utilize the proper smoothing techniques, then you can actually add whole sections to your model and smooth out the seams. This way, it will not be obvious that the added section was not part of the original clay model. These smoothing techniques can also be used when you're starting fresh with a new piece of clay.

Instructions

    • 1

Add several drops of water to each clay piece you want to start smoothing. This helps make the clay softer and easier to work with.

    • 2

Let the clay sit through the night so that it has a chance to absorb the water and get even softer.

    • 3

Place the now softened clay in the area you want to smooth over.

    • 4

Use your thumbs and palms, depending on the size of the piece of clay, to smooth over the already hardened clay, applying long, even strokes. Push the clay against the hardened area to eliminate the seams.

    • 5

Shape the clay with your other fingers until it reaches the desired form. Continue to smooth out the clay with your thumb as needed.
