How to Keep Buckeyes From Going Bad

How to Keep Buckeyes From Going Bad thumbnail
Buckeye nuts are like conkers.

The name buckeye comes from traditional native American folklore. There are two main species to this type of tree -- the Ohio or yellow buckeye. The nuts of the tree are edible, but can also be used for arts and craft projects. To avoid them going bad for projects, the nuts need to be roasted and coated in a protective spray. By doing this, the nuts will be preserved for several years. They will not crack or rot.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the nuts. Wash them with just water, and pat them dry with a towel.

    • 2

Cut a "X" in the bottom of each of the nuts, then place the nuts on roasting tray. Spread the nuts out so they are not piled on top of each other.

    • 3

Roast the nuts in an oven preheated to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Leave them to dry out for at least 40 minutes. Every 10 minutes, shake the tray to move the nuts around so they dry evenly.

    • 4

Remove the nuts at the end of 40 minutes. Leave them to cool right through. It is best to leave them overnight to make sure of this.

    • 5

Spray the nuts with acrylic, once the nuts are dried. Do this outside to avoid inhaling the fumes from the spray. Leave the spray to dry for 12 hours. The spray coats the nut to prevent it from rotting and turning bad, along with giving the buckeyes an attractive sheen.
