How to Become a Pre-GED Instructor
Adult education teachers are vital in helping people without high school diplomas or GEDs obtain their secondary educations. Each adult education program has its own requirements for its teachers. The minimum education is a bachelor's degree. Depending on the school, the requirements may be more stringent. You may need to earn a master's degree or become a licensed teacher. Volunteering to teach adults is a good way to gain valuable experience.

1
Earn your bachelor's degree. The specific subject in which you earn your degree does not necessarily matter. A degree in an education-related field, however, can be helpful in preparing you to teach.
-
2
Volunteer as a teacher or tutor, or do student teaching. Adult education programs typically utilize instructors with teaching experience. If you can volunteer to tutor or teach in an adult education program or some type of program where you lead orientations or teach adults, you will be better prepared to understand the specific needs of adult learners. This will also give you a better chance to get a job when paid positions arise.

3
Become a certified teacher in your state. Not all adult education programs require teachers to have a license, but some do. Some may specifically require teachers to have a license to teach adults. Check with your state's department of education or educator licensing for more information.
-
4
Earn a master's degree in teaching adult education. Again, this is not a requirement, but some adult education programs want their teachers to have a master's degree. Another possibility is a graduate certificate in teaching adult education.
-
5
Cultivate an attitude that is helpful to adult students. Adult students come from various socioeconomic, educational and cultural backgrounds. Teachers must understand their students' individual circumstances. Communication and motivation are also important skills to have as a teacher.

Look for jobs with GED programs in adult education nonprofits or public or private schools. Many school districts have schools or programs specifically for adult learners. The government hires GED teachers to instruct students in juvenile detention and correctional facilities. You might work for adult learning programs in schools, community centers, residential care facilities or libraries as well. Religious organizations also hire GED instructors for adult education programs.
