How to Transfer Multi-Colored Vinyl Graphics to a Sign
Vinyl graphics that are applied to the side of a car, truck or boat can be easily transferred to a sign. To do this, a piece of acrylic is needed to apply the vinyl decal. Decals can be applied either dry or wet, depending on the technique you prefer. A wet installation typically is recommended for beginners, as this will allow you to position the decal before adhering it.
Things You'll Need
- Piece of acrylic
- Lint-free cloth
- Rubbing alcohol
- Dish soap
- 1-quart spray bottle
- Plastic squeegee

1
Wash the piece of acrylic with soap and water. This will remove any dirt that is on the surface. Dry the acrylic with a lint-free cloth.
-
2
Apply rubbing alcohol to another clean cloth, and wipe the surface to prepare it for the decal.
-
-
3
Mix your application fluid by adding three to four drops of dish soap to a 1-quart spray bottle.
-
4
Lay the decal on a bench or on the driveway. Pull off the backing as you spray the adhesive side of the decal.
-
5
Spray the surface of the acrylic with the application fluid. Spray your hands, then place the decal on the sign. Rub over the decal with your hands to smooth out wrinkles.
-
6
Remove excess water by using the plastic squeegee. Start at the center and work your way out towards the edges. Wipe the area dry with a clean cloth.
-
7
Allow the adhesive on the decal to dry for at least 24 hours.
