Tether your cell phone to your computer to share the phone's Internet connection.

Today, many people use their phones to access their favorite sites on the Internet. Using the Internet on your cell phone requires you to have a data plan activated on the device. Once activated, you can use your phone's Internet connection as your home Internet connection. Cell phones are capable of Internet sharing, or "tethering." Before tethering your cell phone to your computer, make sure that your data plan is active.

Instructions

    • 1

Dial "611" to reach your mobile provider's customer service department. Tell the agent you want to make sure that your phone's Internet connection is active so you can tether the device with your computer to share a connection. The agent will recommend a data package for this purpose. A data package is necessary, as browsing the Internet through the computer will use significantly more bandwidth than browsing on your mobile device.

Connect your phone to your computer using the device's USB cable.

    • 3

Activate the "Internet Sharing" feature on your device. The exact instructions differ depending on your phone model. Consult your user manual for particular model instructions. For example, Windows mobile device users click "Start," "Accessories" and "Internet Sharing." Select "USB" as the PC connection type, and "Data" as the Network Connection type. Press "Connect."
