How to Use SRT Captions

An SRT file is a text file used in conjunction with video to display subtitles on movies. The subtitle file is small and does not contain any video data itself. SRT files must have the same name as the movie file they're used for if you want your media player to automatically detect their presence for movie playback. Otherwise, you must manually select to use that SRT file. Multiple media players support using SRT files for subtitles in movie playback.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the SRT file for your movie if you don't have one already from a subtitle database, such as Open Subtitles.

    • 2

Place your SRT file in the same folder as your movie file. Right-click the SRT file, click "Rename" and change its name to the exact same name as your movie file, including the same spelling and the same spacing.

    • 3

Open your movie viewing program of choice such as VLC Media Player, Windows Media Player or Cyberlink PowerDVD.

    • 4

Click "Open," then select your movie file. If you named the file properly, the subtitles will automatically load when you open the movie. To view without the subtitles, move the SRT file to a different folder on your computer or delete it entirely.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your subtitle file does not sync appropriately with your video file, try downloading a different version of the subtitle file. Subtitles are manually created and may vary in timing from one to another.

  • You can permanently encode subtitles into the movie using other software, such as Any Video Converter, if you want to burn it and watch on a DVD player. You cannot remove subtitles once they're encoded with the movie.
