How to Make Letters Look Like Clouds

Cloud lettering is good for titles and posters.

Cloud lettering, or drawing letters than look like clouds, can be done with every letter. The key to drawing realistic cloud letters is to not make the letters too precise. Clouds are always changing and never in a perfect shape, so the letter should also embody this quality. Shading is important and harsh lines and edges are to be avoided at all costs.

Instructions

    • 1

Select which letters you want to draw.

    • 2

Lightly sketch out the outline of the letters in block characters. This will serve as the wire-frame template for the clouds.

    • 3

Draw rounded wisps around the letters. Keep the size and curvature random and varied. Let each stroke blend into the next. For added depth, shade some areas harder and some lighter. For example, shading the bottom of the cloud letter is more realistic because the sun shines on the top, not the bottom.

    • 4

Keep holes tight. Make the holes in letters like "O," "R," "D" and "B" small. Larger holes look fake, while smaller, poorly defined holes are more realistic. It is not uncommon to see small holes in the clouds, but it is rare that clouds form a large circle.

    • 5

Shade in the clouds to give some additional depth. Keep shading to the edges, without making any sharp lines. Allow the clouds to have some trails, this adds depth and realism to the cloud letters.

    • 6

Erase the wire-frame outlines of the letters if they are still visible after shading.
