How to Organize and Link Widgets on a WordPress Sidebar

WordPress is a content management system that allows you to create blogs and websites online. You can place widgets on your WordPress sidebar to add new functions to your site, such as links to other sites, recent posts or newest comments. You can also organize the order in which the widgets display on your sidebar from your WordPress dashboard. This allows you to design the way your layout appears when a visitor comes to your blog.

Instructions

  1. Add Widgets to the Sidebar

    • 1

Log into your WordPress site using your administrator account.

    • 2

Click "Appearance" from the left menu, then click the "Widgets" sub-menu. You will see a list of widgets that are installed on your WordPress on the left side and the sidebar areas listed on the right side.

    • 3

Click the name of the sidebar you would like to edit. Usually, this will be named "Primary Widget Area," "Left Sidebar" or "Right Sidebar." This will extend the sidebar and display the current widgets in the widget area.

    • 4

Click and hold the widget from the widget list that you would like to link to the sidebar.

    • 5

Drag the widget box to the sidebar, then release the mouse button. The widget box will appear within the sidebar. Repeat this process for each widget you would like to add to the sidebar.

    Organize Widgets on the Sidebar

    • 6

Click and hold a widget box within the sidebar widget list.

    • 7

Drag the widget up or down the list. The widget list within the sidebar is dynamic and will allow you to reorganize the widget display order.

    • 8

Release the mouse button to place the widget box in the desired spot on the sidebar. Repeat this process until you have organized your widgets.
