How to Make a Popcorn Stitch

The popcorn stitch is one of many crochet stitches that create a three-dimensional look to the surface of the work. This stitch is commonly worked on the edges of sweater bodies and sleeves and also in various afghan patterns. The popcorn stitch is a twist on the basic double crochet, so if you have experience with that stitch, you can easily master this variation.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a row of double crochet, stopping right before the stitch where you want to have a popcorn.

    • 2

Make five double crochet stitches in the next stitch in the row. The stitches will fan out from right to left.

    • 3

Pull the hook out from the loop after the fifth double crochet. Push the hook through the top of the first double crochet, picking up both strands of yarn.

    • 4

Keep both strands of yarn in place. Push the hook back through the loop that you dropped. Pull this loop through the strands you have on the hook.

    • 5

Pull the yarn loop to tighten the stitch. The popcorn bobble will form and stick out from the surface of the work.
