How to Request Blueprints From the Landlord
The blueprints for your rented home or apartment detail not only its floor plan, but specific attributes that make your home different from that of your neighbors. Blueprints show the measurements of each room and the organization of the rooms and may even offer details about the flooring, cabinets and closets. If you want to add on to your rented home, make a plumbing adjustment or even change insurance policies, you may need to get copies of the original blueprints from your landlord.

1
Get in touch with your landlord. If possible, set up a meeting: stop by her office, meet her for coffee or even invite her to your home. Meeting with your landlord shows that you care about her as a person and that you respect the fact that you're renting a home from her. If you cannot meet with your landlord, place a phone call -- it's preferable to email.

2
Ask your landlord for a copy of the blueprints. Explain specifically why you need them. For example, you might share that you're curious about the type of foundation used in your home or you want to know the exact measurements of the living room ceiling.

3
Give your landlord a time frame in which to provide the blueprints. Be reasonable, but be firm if you need them quickly. If you don't give a deadline, you may find that your landlord never gets a chance to give them to you. Be specific: "I would really appreciate it if I could have these within two weeks" or "The plumber needs these by next Tuesday."

4
Treat your landlord with respect. Remember that even if yours is a strained relationship, it's important to show respect and honor with your landlord. You are renting a home from her, and your lease agreement includes a demand that you treat her property with respect. When you're kind and polite to your landlord, it shows that you truly do care about others and will solidify her opinion that you're capable of also respecting her property.
