How to Make a Selection Transparent With GIMP

GIMP is a popular photo manipulation program that is available for free download and use. It is commonly used for photo editing, retouching and digital art purposes. Many artists and photographers enjoy the creative elements made possible by such programs, for example, the ability to make images transparent. This is often used when layering images and while blending aspects of an image.

Instructions

    • 1

Open GIMP on the computer by double-clicking on the program icon.

    • 2

Open the image you intend to edit within GIMP by clicking on "File," then "Open" and double-clicking on the image.

    • 3

Click on a selection tool from the menu to the left. This appears as a black arrow and when clicked on, presents various tools. Choose the icon that looks like a magic wand.

    • 4

Make your selection. Click and drag over top of the area that requires editing. If the tool selects too much, hold down the "CTRL" and "-" keys, while clicking on the area to deselect it.

    • 5

Click on the layer that contains the image in the layer panel to the bottom right of the program.

    • 6

Select "Layer" from the same window, then click on "Transparency." Choose the "Alpha Channel" option.

    • 7

Click on "Edit" at the top of the screen, then select "Clear." The selection will now be transparent.

    • 8

Select "File" and "Save As." Within the new window, title the project, choose "PNG" as the file type and check off the box that says "Save color values from transparent pixels." Click "Save" when complete.
