How to Draw a Suitcase
A suitcase is a suitable subject for the budding artist to draw. Its various perspectives allow the artist to practice line and angle techniques as well as shading and light source study. A suitcase can be added to a portrait of a traveler or any scene where the subjects are going on a trip. Use some basic drawing principles and the correct steps to draw a suitcase that looks realistic.

Draw a rectangle using a ruler and basic HB pencil. Use a protractor to ensure all the angles are square at 90 degrees. Mark the corners of the rectangle, starting from the top left and working clockwise, A, B, C and D.

Using a ruler and protractor, place a dot 1 inch from corner A on a 45-degree angle to the right of the corner. Place a dot 1 inch away from corner B on a 135-degree angle to the right of the corner. Draw a straight line from corner A to its corresponding dot. Draw a straight line from corner B to its corresponding dot. Connect dot A to dot B with a horizontal straight line. Draw a dot 1 inch away from corner C on a 135-degree angle to the right of the corner. Connect corner C with its corresponding dot. Connect dots B and C with a vertical straight line. You have now created a three dimensional rectangle for the suitcase.

Select a light source for the suitcase. Imagine this light source on one side of the suitcase and keep it stationary. Use a graphite pencil turned on its side to shade the side of the suitcase that is opposite the light source. Shade the corners of the suitcase, getting lighter as you move toward the light source.

Draw the handle in the middle top of the suitcase. Slightly shade the underside of the handle with a graphite pencil. Draw all the straps on the suitcase using a ruler. Shade the areas under and around the straps where the light source would not reach.

Spray acrylic sealer approximately 5 inches from the drawing. Allow the sealer to dry.
