How to Remove Dried Grout From a Laminate Countertop

Kate McFarlin

If you used grout to seal a laminate countertop and didn't get all of it off before it dried, you may be left with a big mess. Do not scrape at the grout with a metal utensil, as this may mar the surface of the laminate. In order to remove dried grout from a laminate countertop safely you must take a few precautions.

Leaving grout to dry on a laminate countertop can create a mess.

It may take a few tries, but you can get the countertop clean again.

  1. Scrape off excess grout with wooden sticks. Wood will not mar the surface of your laminate countertop. Place the stick underneath the grout and gently begin prying it free. Work from each side of the grout, loosening it and tear off pieces as they come free.

  2. Scrub the area with a nylon scrubber pad. Douse the pad in hot water, but do not apply any cleaner. Scrub the grout with a circular motion to loosen it. Frequently dip your scrubber back into hot water and continue scrubbing.

  3. Repeat the process with the wooden sticks. The hot water will further loosen the seal of the grout on the laminate and you can pry more off as it this happens.

  4. Scrub the area again with your scrubber pad. There may still be some residue from the grout left. Once again, dip the pad in hot water and scrub the surface until this residue is gone.

  5. Buff the countertop with a clean cloth. Once the grout has been removed, use a clean cloth to dry the area and buff it to a shine.
