A cowl scarf is simply a tube of fabric through which you put your head. It is ideal for cold days when the wind is strong, since it can be pulled up to cover the head, as well as the neck, and there are no loose ends to be blown around. Providing you have basic knitting skills, you can knit a simple cowl in the round, by using circular knitting needles. These needles consist of needle tips joined together by a flexible plastic cord, which allows you to knit a seamless tube, rather than knit a flat piece in traditional rows, which needs sewing up.
Things You'll Need
- Worsted-weight yarn
- Circular knitting needles, size 9, 29-inches
- Tape measure
- Darning needle
Loosely cast on 100 stitches. Check that your stitches are straight and that what will be the bottom of your tube is not twisted and sits under the needle. You now have a long row of knitting which you need to form into a circle to continue knitting your tube.
Slip the last stitch, which is the first stitch you cast on from the left needle to the right needle. Lift the last stitch to be cast on over this stitch and onto the left needle.
Pull the yarn tight and continue knitting the stitches from the left needle, keeping the stitches straight and ensuring they do not twist around the needles. Twisted stitches are a common beginner's problem and will soon become obvious. There is no option but to start the project again, and this time you will realize the importance of keeping stitches straight.
Continue knitting your tube until it is the desired length. A 20- to 25-inch tube should make an ample cowl for an adult.
Bind off your stitches loosely.
Cut the yarn, leaving a 5-inch tail. Pull the yarn through the last stitch on your needle and pull tightly.
Thread the darning needle with the yarn tail and sew a few stitches to secure the yarn. Trim off excess.
