How to Press a Tie

How to Press a Tie thumbnail
Check the care tag on your tie before ironing.

Donning a wrinkled tie does nothing for a smart suit or a fashionable dress shirt. Instead of tossing the less-than-perfect tie in favor of another, you can remove the wrinkles with the help of a popular household appliance. As long as the care tag permits, you can use an iron to press the tie and remove the wrinkles. Then, your tie will be an asset to your appearance, not a liability. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Read the care tag on the back of the tie to determine the proper iron setting. Set the iron to the recommended setting.

    • 2

Spray a lint-free, thin cotton cloth with plain water to dampen it. Place the tie on the ironing board face-down and place the the damp cloth over it.

    • 3

Iron the tie, starting at the top. Move the iron from the outside corners of the tie toward the middle as you progress down the length of the tie. If you move the iron from the middle to the outside, you may create creasing and wrinkling on the edges.

    • 4

Remove the damp cloth and look at the front of the tie, periodically, while ironing, to check your progress.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the care tag does not recommend ironing, be aware that you may damage the tie if you do choose to iron it.
