Contrast black eyes with pale face make up for a ghoulish zombie look.

A well-placed bruise -- such as a ghoulish black eye -- is the ideal addition to any scary Halloween costume. Bruises vary in appearance from a reddish color to greenish-yellow or bluish-purple, depending on how old they are. The key to a realistic-looking fake bruise is to blend together different color pigments in an irregular shape. For a more gruesome look, accompany your bruise with some pretend cuts and scrapes.

Things You'll Need

  • Translucent face powder
  • Matte pale green eyeshadow
  • Matte purple eyeshadow
  • Matte navy or charcoal eyeshadow
  • Make up brush or sponge

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area of skin where you want to place your fake bruise using soap and water.

    • 2

Dust the skin with translucent powder to absorb any excess oils and create a matte canvas for your makeup.

    • 3

Apply a thin layer of pale, green eyeshadow to the area of skin where you want the bruise to appear using a wet-tipped make up brush or a damp sponge. Aim to create an irregular shape, with uneven edges.

    • 4

Smudge the outer edge of the green eyeshadow with your fingers so it blends into the surrounding skin.

    • 5

Apply a thicker layer of purple eyeshadow on top of the green eyeshadow, leaving plenty of green eyeshadow visible around the edges.

    • 6

Dab splotches of navy or charcoal eyeshadow on top of the purple eyeshadow.

    • 7

Blend the edges of the different colors into each another using your fingertips.

    • 8

Dust your fake bruise with translucent powder for extra staying power.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use pictures of bruises as a reference when creating your own bruise. Make your bruise look more intense by dabbing on a red blusher before applying the purple color. Instead of using eyeshadow, purchase a bruise makeup color wheel from a special effects or stage makeup supplier.
