While many men enjoy the look and style of full beards, it becomes occasionally necessary to trim a beard. Keeping a beard cleaned up will keep you from looking unprofessional or unkempt. Shaving with a razor is a very traditional way of trimming your beard line. Commercial razors are used in many homes, while barber shops still use the traditional single-blade razor. While it is important to be careful trimming your beard line with a razor, the proper finished look will leave your skin feeling smooth and healthy.

Things You'll Need

  • Washcloth
  • Shaving cream
  • Razor

Take a hot shower, warm bath or apply a warm washcloth to your face. This will soften the hairs in your beard and loosen up your pores.

Spray some shaving cream into your hand and apply it to your beard. Work the cream so that it turns into a thick lather. Apply just enough cream to give an even coat to your beard.

Select a section of your beard that you want to trim, and cautiously shave away the excess hairs. Use your finger as a guide so you keep the line even.

Continue moving across your beard trimming all of the sections that need to be cleaned up.

Wash your face to clean off the shaving cream and loose hairs. Dry off your face by patting it with a towel. Apply aftershave products, if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a sharp razor when shaving. Dull razors can cause pain, red bumps and infections.
  • Shave with the grain of your hairs to avoid bumps and ingrown hairs.
  • Cuts are possible when shaving with a razor.
