How to Draw Bleeding Hearts & Flowers

When drawing a bleeding heart and paired flower, you must ask yourself what kind of flower you feel best relates to the heart. There are many types of flowers to choose from, so you want to be sure to pick the right one for this particular drawing. Instructions

  1. Bleeding Hearts

    • 1

Sketch out the basic shape of the heart as it is depicted in the picture you are using as a reference guide. Use light pencil strokes to construct the two-hump top and pointed bottom of this heart, making sure that both halves are proportional to each other.

    • 2

Draw small, slightly bent lines throughout the interior of the heart you just drew to create the cut texture of this object. The blood will drip from each of these cut lines, therefore they need to look as realistic as possible.

    • 3

Create the slender ovals to represent each of the blood drops that pour from each of the cut lines with light pencil strokes.

    • 4

Trace over all intended pencil marks with an ink pen to create a clean and bold appearance of the bleeding heart. Do not trace over any rough marks used to create the basic shape of the heart, as these are not needed for the drawing. Let the ink dry, then completely erase any remaining pencil lines from the page.

    • 5

Color in the heart and all of the featured marks with the coloring utensils you have for this project. Colored pencils work well with creating a contrasting look, as the pressure of the lead on the paper can greatly effect the appearance. If possible, use several different shades of red to represent the heart, cuts and blood in a contrasting way.

    Flowers

    • 6

Draw a medium-sized circle on your piece of paper, as this will act as the basic guideline to draw the flower you have chosen.

    • 7

Sketch out the oval-like middle of the flower first, adding each of the individual petals all the way around the rose. Use light pencil strokes until you are confident with this center.

    • 8

Draw the first petals of the rose so that they are squiggled, curved lines that wrap around the center piece you just drew. Sketch the secondary petal in a similar fashion, keeping the basic shape tight and as close to the center as you can.

    • 9

Create the next layer of petals using light pencil strokes, as these will have more defining shapes than the inner petals. Divide this third layer of petals into two different sections of petals, giving an almost triangular shape to their appearance. Use rounded edges to construct these petals.

    • 10

Draw the next layer of petals with even more individual petals than the previous layer. Shape these petals in a triangular shape, rounding out the edges to mimic the look in the picture you are using as a reference guide.

    • 11

Add oval-like leaves to the sides of the rose to complete the sketch of this particular flower. Trace all of the necessary pencil lines with an ink pen, avoiding all of the guidelines you used to create this image. Let the ink dry, then erase any remaining pencil marks from the page.

    • 12

Color the rose with the necessary utensils to give your flower a more realistic appearance. Use different shades of red to contrast this image.
