How to Make Earrings With Premade Fittings

Glue flat-backed charms to earring posts for simple, elegant earrings.

Earring fittings are the pieces of the earring that allow the earrings to attach to the ear. Examples are French hooks, which consist of a graceful curve of wire that goes through the ear, and post earrings, which include a straight post that goes through the ear and a backing that prevents the earring from sliding out. Premade fittings allow you to concentrate on creating the earrings themselves, rather than worrying about the hardware.

Instructions

  1. French Hook Beaded Earrings

    • 1

String several beads onto a headpin. A headpin is a length of wire with a stop on the end that prevents the beads from coming off.

    • 2

Bend the wire above the beads into a 90-degree angle with a pair of round-nose pliers. Make the bend as tight to the beads as possible.

    • 3

Use the round-nose pliers to curve the remaining length of wire into a circle above the beads, leaving a very small amount of space between the end of the wire and the beginning of the circle. If necessary, trim the wire first with a pair of wire cutters.

    • 4

Hook the wire circle through the bottom hole of a French hook.

    • 5

Squeeze the circle closed with the pliers.

    • 6

Repeat the process for a second earring.

    Charm Post Earrings

    • 7

Choose a pair of matching charms that have flat backs and are less than 1 inch in diameter.

    • 8

Apply a dot of super glue to the back of each charm.

    • 9

Apply a dot of super glue to the flat disks attached to the earring posts.

    • 10

Press the charms to the disks, wiping away any excess glue with a rag.

    • 11

Allow the glue to cure for about two minutes, and the earrings are ready to be worn.
