How to Crochet a Chart
Crocheting with a pattern can be difficult because some of the abbreviations and symbols are difficult to understand. A lot of crocheters find crochet pattern charts very confusing because there are complex symbols and color coding. Many of these crochet charts have a key to reference in order to track what each symbol means, so crocheting the pattern becomes easier. Many of the symbols used in charts are universal, so memorizing the symbols can make reading crochet charts second nature.

Learning the Symbols
-
1
Crochet chain stitches when indicated on your chart. The chain stitch symbol is an open circle. Chain stitches are often used as the foundation for any crochet piece.
-
2
Work single crochet stitches when indicated on the chart. The single crochet symbol is an "x" on charts with multiple stitch types. On a chart that is worked completely in single crochet, there will not be a symbol to indicate the stitch, but open and filled squares to indicate color changes.
-
-
3
Crochet half double crochet stitches when indicated on the chart. The symbol for a half double crochet stitch is a "T" shape.
-
4
Crochet a double crochet stitch when indicated on your chart. The double crochet stitch is indicated by a "T" symbol with one small slash in the middle of the "T." See the DMC USA website to view a picture of the double crochet symbol.
-
5
Crochet a triple crochet stitch when indicated on your chart. The triple crochet symbol is much like the double crochet symbol, only with three small slashes in the middle of the "T" shape, as opposed to one in the double crochet symbol.
-
6
Crochet slip stitches when indicated on the chart. The slip stitch symbol is a filled circle. Slip stitches are often used to join rounds or move along a line without adding another full row.

Work a single crochet, a double crochet, a triple crochet, a double crochet and a single crochet in the next stitch. This forms the first petal. Work the same combination of stitches in each of the next four stitches, as indicated on the chart.
