How to Turn Off Facebook Chat for Android
Facebook is a popular social networking Internet website that you can use to stay in touch with your family and friends. The website provides various features for its members to share information, such as pictures, status updates, a comment wall and chat rooms. If you have the Facebook for mobile application installed on your Android phone, and prefer not to receive notification alerts, you can turn off the chat feature whenever you're not using it.

Open the Web browser on your Android phone and type the URL address, "facebook.com" in the search field. Click the "Search" button. After the Web page appears on your phone, you will need to provide your user account information to log on to the website.

Type your email address in the "Email" field and enter your password in the "Password" field. Click the "Log In" button when you're done. Once you're logged into your user account, you will be directed to Facebook's homepage. You will see several icons displayed on the Web page that you can use to share information with your family and friends.

Look for the "Facebook Chat" icon, located near the lower right side of the display screen. Tap on it to open the Facebook Chat feature. Click the "Options" button located next to the "Friends List" option, near the upper right side of the display screen. A popup box will appear on the display screen. From here you can disable or enable several features of Facebook Chat.

Click the check box next to "Go Offline" to disable the chat feature and appear invisible to others in the chat rooms. Facebook Chat will be permanently disabled on your Android phone, until you turn the feature back on.

Click the Facebook Chat (offline) image button, shown near the bottom of the display screen to enable the chat feature and appear back online.

Disable the chat notification sound on your Android phone. Click the check box next to the "Play Sound" option if you want to disable the feature. When the "Play Sound" option is unchecked, you will not be able to hear an alert sound when you receive a new chat notification on your phone.

You can find out who's online without turning the Facebook Chat feature back on. Use the Facebook application, Online Now to find out which of your friends are online in a chat room.
