Jolicloud is a new Linux distribution that brings cloud-computing to older computers.

It is quite common to hear about the installation of Linux next to or overriding a Windows system, but it is more rare to hear about the installation of Linux on a Macintosh machine. However, it is possible, and is not much different from a Windows installation. Jolicloud, now called Joli OS, is a light, fast, browser-based Linux system, currently in version 1.2. It will extend the life of your aging Windows or Mac computer.

Instructions

  1. Installing Jolicloud OS on a Mac Computer

    • 1

Download the Jolicloud OS .ISO (disc image) and burn it to a CD-R or DVD-R. It is only 691 MB, so it will fit onto a CD-R.

    • 2

Boot the Mac from the CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM). To do this, after loading the CD, turn on the computer and hold down the "C" key. This forces a Mac computer to boot from the CD-ROM drive.

    • 3

Select "Install Joli OS" from the boot menu. Follow the steps as the graphical installer asks for your language, location, keyboard type, email address and how much of the hard drive you want to use.

    • 4

Select "Erase and use entire disk." Then click "Forward."

    • 5

Enter your username and password, and click "Forward" one more time. The last screen warns you that there's no going back, but since you want Joli OS on your Mac, go ahead and click "Install." The installation can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Do not touch the computer during the installation, unless prompted by the installer to do so.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because Joli OS is so integrated with web apps and web technology, it's best to have the computer connected to high-speed internet via ethernet cable (not Wi-Fi) during installation.
