How to Get Numlock to Work With the Fn Key on a Dell 1501

The embedded numeric keypad on your Dell makes it easier to calculate numbers on a laptop.

The Dell 1501 Inspiron laptop computer does not include a standard numeric keypad; instead, Dell embedded a numeric keypad within the keyboard that is accessible using special hot key combinations. If you work with numbers and find that a numeric keypad is more efficient than standard keyboard number keys, you can use the Dell Inspiron 1501 "Num Lk" and "Fn" key combinations to access the numeric keypad.

Instructions

1. Press the "Num Lk" key on the Dell laptop keyboard to enable the embedded numeric keypad.

2. Disable the embedded numeric keypad by pressing the "Fn" key and a letter key on the keyboard, which will also enable lowercase keyboard functions. Press the "Num Lk" key.

3. Press the "Fn" key, the "Shift" key and a letter key to disable the embedded numeric keypad temporarily and enable uppercase keyboard functions.

4. Press the "Fn" key, the "Shift" key and a number key to temporarily enable only one numeric keypad key on the keyboard.

Tips & Warnings

• Note that the blue characters on the "7," "8," "9," "0," "U," "I," "O," "P," "J," "K," "L," ";," "M," ".," and "/" keys are activated as the embedded numeric keypad when the "Num Lk" key is pressed.
