Monitor your child's online activities.

Some children draw little distinction between what happens in real life and their virtual life, including online interactions on the Facebook social network. Unfortunately, information that kids post on this and other networking sites is potentially harmful, depending on the situation and context. As a parent, you can periodically monitor your child's Facebook activity.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your child about the dangers of social networking sites and stress the importance of keeping some information private.

    • 2

Ask your child for the Facebook account information, such as the username and password. If he does not feel comfortable sharing his information with you, do not feel offended. It is his personal account, and teens need a layer of privacy.

    • 3

Create a Facebook account and befriend your child on the networking site. You can sign up for an account by going to facebook.com and clicking the "Sign Up" button on the front page. To monitor his posts, locate his profile via the top search box and click the "Add as Friend" button. You cannot see his profile or activities until he approves the request.

    • 4

Go to your child if you suspect that problems exist with his online or offline life. Ask if he would like to talk about any personal troubles, including the conversations that take place on Facebook.

Tips & Warnings

  • No tool exists to monitor your child's Facebook account without using his login credentials or befriending him on the social network.
