Punk is known for its distinctive style often consisting of black band T-shirts, silver studded belts, piercings and spiky hair. While that’s not all it takes to be punk, it’s an important part of the punk identity. As punk is about rejecting norms and expressing yourself, there certainly is not just one look that defines a boy as punk. However, there are some common traits of punk dress that can help you get the look you want.

Things You'll Need

  • Band T-shirt
  • Leather jacket
  • Dark jeans or pants
  • Boots or tennis shoes

Wear a T-shirt of your favorite punk band. Don’t wear a shirt of a band you don’t like just to look punk. Pick a band you really like. Punk band T-shirts are often black or red, but you’re welcome to experiment with other colors. Rips or holes in your T-shirt can add character as well.

Wear a leather jacket with various metal adornments. These can include spikes, safety pins or something else. Buttons from your favorite punk bands or ones with slogans or mottos can work well too. Again, get creative and try to express your true identity.

Wear dark blue or black jeans or dark pants, such as ones made by Dickies. Wear them tight or baggy, depending on your preference. Wear a black belt, perhaps with silver studs in it.

Wear boots or tennis shoes. Some punk boys like to wear large, black Combat boots, such as those made by Dr. Martens, while others prefer tennis shoes, like Converse or Vans.

Style your hair. This can mean very shaggy or a buzz cut. Dye your hair multiple colors if you’d like, such as green or blue. As well, consider shaving your head, except for a Mohawk. There are many punk hairstyles to choose from, and once more, get creative and express yourself.

Add accessories such as piercings (eyebrow and lip are common places) and wristbands with silver studs.
