Certification lends credibility to your career as a professional body-piercing artist. It shows your customers that you have received training and are aware of the seriousness of your profession. Lack of proper technique can lead to infections and scarring as well as the transference of blood-borne illnesses such as hepatitis. States do not typically require certification for the art itself, but they do require that you register with the state you will be working in and receive a license to perform piercings. License requirements can include certification in blood-borne pathogens, according to the Association of Professional Piercers. States typically grant the same license to body piercers as they do tattoo artists.

Acquire training by attending a class, seminar or studying through an online course. Videos and magazines can help you learn about your career and prepare you for further training. Body piercing shops typically post information regarding local classes and some state heath departments have information about classes on their websites.

Receive a certificate of completion in a blood-borne pathogen class. The Red Cross, Occupational Safety and Health Administration and The National Safety Council all provide classes for free or minimal cost.
