How Do I Give a Polyester Flag an Antiqued Look?

How Do I Give a Polyester Flag an Antiqued Look? thumbnail
A polyester flag can take on an antique look with fabric paint.

Vintage-looking flags conjure up memories of small-town parades and patriot pride. They can also add a folk-art flair to crafts or just hang proudly by themselves. The most affordable flags are made of polyester, and although the material is tough and durable, it doesn't take well to traditional antiquing techniques such as tea staining. However, with a little fabric paint and faux painting tricks, it's possible to give an ordinary polyester flag an antiqued look.

Things You'll Need

  • Polyester flag
  • Tan and dark brown fabric paints
  • Water
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Cardboard
  • Sea sponge
  • Artist paintbrush

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the polyester flag to remove sizing. Allow the flag to dry completely.

    • 2

Lay the flag on a piece of cardboard to protect the work surface. Don't use newspaper because the ink can transfer to the flag.

    • 3

Mix equal parts of tan paint and water in a small bowl. Stir well. Mix the dark brown paint in the same manner.

    • 4

Wet the sponge in water and wring out well. Dip the sponge into the tan paint mixture. Dab the paint-covered sponge onto the flag. Don't worry if the paint puddles. Those areas will dry darker and add to the aged look. Continue until the flag is completely covered.

    • 5

Rinse out the sea sponge and repeat the process with the dark brown paint, but this time dab only around the outside edges of the flag where age would normally show.

    • 6

Dip the artist paintbrush into the dark brown paint. Hold the brush about 8 to 10 inches above the flag. Tap the front of the brush handle with the pencil to spatter the paint over the flag. Move the brush around to create the desired aged pattern.

    • 7

      Allow flag to dry completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a more antiqued look, allow the flag to dry and re-apply the fabric paint as above.

  • Practice these painting techniques on small polyester flags or scrap pieces of fabric before attempting a larger piece.
