How to Take Your iPod Touch to the Max
One thing that is appealing about the iPhone and iPod touch is the hardware. The sturdy, compact design is lightweight and easy to handle. There is little variation in the design, as they all come in the same charcoal black color with the same plain, black background. Apple does let you choose a custom picture for the background, but that's about all the customization that is allowed. There are a number of things you can do to get the most out of your iPod touch.

1
Jailbreak your iPod touch. A jailbreak installs a program on your desktop called Cydia that contains access to third-party apps. The iPod must be connected to your computer via USB cable during the jailbreak, and it generally takes just a few minutes to complete. The jailbreak utility you use must be compatible with your device's firmware version.

2
Install a theme. Themes are available in Cydia and will customize your iPod with a background, custom fonts and sounds. This is the most creative way to make your iPod touch stand out from the rest.

Create folders for your apps. If you do a lot of downloading, your home screen quickly fill with apps that become difficult to find. You can search for a specific app using the Search screen, but this becomes tedious. Drag an icon on top of a second icon to merge them into a folder. Type a name for the folder into the box that will help you identify it. Sort the apps any way you want, such as by alphabetical order or categories.

4
Buy a rubberized, protective case. There are many different styles available, and some have extra features like a belt clip or stand. The hard, plastic cases are cheap but provide decent protection against falls. A rubberized case is ideal because the iPod touch has an extremely slippery surface. This kind of case provides a nice grip and adds thickness, making it easier to hold.

Download a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) app from the App Store. VOIP uses your Wi-Fi to place voice calls just like a real phone. You'll need a headset with a microphone, and a high-speed Internet connection to place high quality calls. Some apps that offer free VOIP are: Textree with Voice, iCall and Fring.
