How to Wire LED Tape

LED tape houses small LED (light emitting diode) bulbs within the length of the tape strip. Most of these tapes are made to be cut down to custom lengths and placed along auto running boards, bumpers or areas where additional lights are wanted. Many light strips get their power from internal wires powered off a 12V battery. Others get their power off a car battery or fuse system.

Instructions

  1. 12V Tape

    • 1

Unroll the LED tape and measure out the areas where you want it placed. Cut the tape to your desired length. Be careful not to cut into a bulb housing point on the strip.

    • 2

Peel the back off the LED tape and check that the area on the car is washed off, dry and free of grit. Place the tape, tacky side down, onto the area of the auto. Peel up at least 12 inches of the tape. Strip the bulbs out and expose the two wires.

    • 3

Run the wires into the car's headlights or rear light panel and splice the positive wire to the positive car wires and negative to negative. Place wire caps onto the sliced wires and twist until all exposed wire is under the caps.

    Strip Lights

    • 4

Remove the headlight housing and wrap the strips around the inside of the headlight panel and around the headlight.

    • 5

Check that the LED strip is hidden entirely behind the headlamp.

    • 6

Run the wires off the strip to the auto fuse box, along the inside edge of the car's hood. Connect the wires to the light housings going positive to positive and negative to negative. Use wire cutters to gain access to the wires on the strip if necessary.
