Instructions

    • 1

Shuffle the deck of playing cards. Deal the cards out clockwise, the order of play, starting with the person on your immediate left.

    • 2

Choose and declare the trump suit if you are the dealer; if you are not the dealer, listen to hear what trump suit the dealer chooses. The trump suit is the highest suit in the game.

    • 3

Check to see who holds the two of clubs. Whoever holds the two of clubs begins the game by placing it on the playing area. The player to that person's left then plays a card of the same suit, followed by each other player in sequence, moving clockwise. You must play a card of the same suit as the dealer, if you have one. If you do not have a card that matches the suit of the dealer's opening car, you may play a card of a different suit. You cannot open with a card from the trump suit until the trump suit has been broken. The trump suit is broken when a player cannot match the opening suit and plays a card from the trump suit instead.

Assess the cards played after each player has played a card. The player who has laid the highest card wins the round and takes the collected cards (the "trick") away, scoring one point. The highest card is determined by the numerical order of the card. Aces are high cards, followed by kings, all the way down to deuces. Unless a card from the trump suit is played, the highest card is determined by the highest played card from the opening suit. However, a trump suit card beats any other cards of a different suit. For instance, if clubs is the trump suit, a two of clubs (the lowest card of the trump suits) still beats an ace of diamonds (the highest card of the diamond suit) if both are played in the same trick. If two cards from the trump suit are played in the same trick, the highest card, with ace being the highest and two the lowest, takes the trick.

Play continues until all the cards have been played. At this time, players compare who won the most tricks, and thereby scored the most points.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are several variations of Pluck. Make sure all players are aware of the rules before the game begins.
