How to Import AutoCAD Into Revit
Architects and engineers use various types of computer programs for different functions in their day-to-day business. AutoCAD may be used to create a schematic floor plan of a building; while Revit might be used to create a three-dimensional model of the AutoCAD floor plan. For this reason, Autodesk programs have a built-in compatibility with one another. Sometimes this compatibility is very small, but sometimes it allows you to take an entire file into another program.

1
Open the Revit view in which you want to import or link the AutoCAD file. An AutoCAD file can be imported into any view in the project; however, it is easiest to start out in a floor plan or elevation view.
-
2
Link an AutoCAD drawing by selecting the "Insert" tab, "Link" panel and "Link CAD." This method should be used if you are still working on the CAD file in AutoCAD. Every time you open the Revit project the AutoCAD file will be updated and the newest changes will appear in the same location as the linked CAD file.

3
Import an AutoCAD file by selecting the "Insert" tab, "Import" panel and "Import CAD." The AutoCAD file will not be updated if you make changes to it in AutoCAD. If you make changes after you import the file, you will need to delete the imported file and import it again.
-
4
Select the AutoCAD file to be linked or imported into the Revit project in either the "Link CAD Formats" or "Import CAD Formats" dialogue box.
-
5
Change the settings for the imported or linked AutoCAD file by changing the "Colors," "Layers," "Import Units," "Positioning" or "Place at:" drop-down menus. Select "Close" once you have the settings the way you want. The AutoCAD file will be visible in the view you originally had open.
