Instructions on How to Install Arizona Red Flagstone

Instructions

    • 1

Unroll your length of garden hose and use it as a guide for establishing the outer perimeter of your flagstone walkway. Measure your preferred width (most walkways are around 3 feet) and use the hose to outline your walkway. Dig down with a shovel and remove the sod and dirt at least 4 inches deep in between your sections of hose.

    • 2

Layer the bottom 3 inches or so of your walkway area with pea gravel. Run the compactor over the pea gravel to compact it into the dirt. Cover the compacted pea gravel with at least 2 inches of rough sand, which acts as a base for the flagstone itself. Adjust the depth of your sand layer depending on the thickness of your flagstone so that the finished height is roughly flush with the rest of your lawn.

    • 3

Lay out your flagstone pieces within the walkway path on top of the sand. Tap them into place with the rubber mallet. Place the pieces as close or as far away from each other as your personal preference dictates, as joint spacing in walkways is purely based upon visual appeal. Break larger pieces up with a masonry hammer to fill in larger voids or to make irregular pieces fit into an area.

    • 4

Fill the joints between the flagstone pieces with sand. Cover the entire walkway in at least an inch of extra sand, then run the compactor over the surface of the flagstone walkway to compact everything into place. Sweep the remaining sand off of the surface of the walkway.
