How to Make Ice Tongs

How to Make Ice Tongs thumbnail
Make your own tongs for picking out ice from the bucket.

If you are having guests or a party, it's proper to include either ice tongs, a spoon or an ice scooper next to your ice bucket. This will prevent ice from being touched directly by your guests' hands, avoiding the spread of germs. Ice tongs are essentially a small plastic, wooden or metal tool that can be relatively inexpensive when purchased at the store. However, you can also make your own ice tongs with three simple materials found in your home or at local arts and crafts stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Craft glue or wood glue
  • Two large craft sticks or popsicle sticks
  • Wooden clothespins

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase two craft sticks or find two popsicle sticks. Color one side of each of the sticks with a marker if you want decorated ice tongs, or leave them plain.

    • 2

Glue one stick to one flat side of the clothespin with the colored side facing outward. Be sure the stick is even at the top of the clothespin but overhangs at least a few inches at the bottom.

    • 3

Glue the other stick to the opposite flat side of the clothespin with the colored side facing outward. As with the first stick, be sure it is even at the top of the clothespin but overhangs at least a few inches at the bottom.

    • 4

Let the glue dry as per the instructions on the glue container. Place the tongs next to the ice bowl. When you squeeze to open and close the clothespin, the sticks will grab onto the ice.
