Draping and securing the flag correctly will show respect to the soldier whose memory you are honoring.

When performing a military burial, it is proper to drape the casket with an American flag when carrying it prior to burial. An honor guard detail of either nine or 21 members will move the casket when needed and will remove the flag before burial. Displaying and securing the flag on the casket are part of the etiquette involved in this tragic, yet patriotic, ritual.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange the flag on the casket so that the field with the stars is at the top left-hand corner.

    • 2

Pull the opposite corner of the flag down so that draping is even and the stripes run parallel to the coffin.

    • 3

Make sure the flag hangs down evenly on all four sides of the coffin.

    • 4

Gather around the casket and take the handles as you pick up the casket. Ensure that the flag does not blow up or move by moving slowly and evenly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Regulations governing the handling of the flag expressly forbid using tape or other items to secure the flag in place.

  • Do not let the flag touch the ground or any other objects, such as vases with flowers.
