Lessons on How to Draw Manga Step by Step
Draw Japanese comics, or Manga, in a few steps. Drawing manga requires an adherence to its drawing style, which has certain conventions for drawing characters. Manga characters have their own distinct look and facial features, which separates them from their American counterparts. As an artist, you must also think about page construction on the manga pages. True manga reads right to left instead of left to right. The ability to draw manga allows American artists to make themselves more marketable in the comic book industry.

1
Construct a basic manga character from a stick figure consisting of lines and ovals. Draw ovals for the head, shoulders, rib cage and pelvis. The hands and feet can also be represented as ovals in this preliminary stage. Draw lines from the shoulders and pelvis to make the limbs. Create a line through the center of the figure to represent the spine.

2
Draw three-dimensional forms over the figure. Add cylinders over the linear arms and box rectangles over the rib cage and pelvic ovals. This will give the whole figure a sense of three dimensions and is very useful when placing a figure in perspective. Add muscles on top of the forms. Look at anatomy books in order to determine the look and placement of the muscles. Draw clothing on the character and give him hair. Refer to more referencing to get the type of clothing and hairstyle you want. Draw the clothing over the figure by drawing what you see.

Write or work from a script that tells what is happening on each page of your manga. Create the required panels outlined in the script with a ruler. Draw your character in the panels of the manga, following the story given in the script. Illustrate any actions specified in the script. You may have to gather more reference to illustrate different things such as backgrounds and poses.
