How to Make a Monkey Fist Keychain
The monkey fist or monkey's fist is a knot used by sailors and rock climbers. It forms a dense ball at the end of a line. The purpose of this knot was originally to add weight for throwing so that a line could be looped around a spar, stanchion or other object. Monkey's fists can also be used for decorative purposes, to ornament keychains, zipper pulls and other accessories. Tying your own monkey's fist knot for a keychain is simple and fun.

1
Hold your left hand in front of you with the palm facing you. Separate your index and middle fingers from your ring and pinky fingers slightly.
-
2
Wrap your line three or four times around your fingers, starting on the inside near the palm. When you're done, the end of the line should be on the inside, near the fingertips.
-
-
3
Wrap the line three or four times around the loops you've just made, using the gap between your fingers to wrap it.
-
4
Wrap the line three or four times around the loops you just made. The line should go around the second set of turns, but inside the first set.
-
5
Tie a knot in the end of the line and tuck it into the center of the knot, then pull the loops tight. The line should form a hard, dense ball.
-
6
Form the unattached end of your line into a loop, then wrap it around itself and tie it off. You can then insert a keyring into this loop.

Tips & Warnings
It doesn't matter whether you wrap the line three or four times, as long as you use the same number of turns at every step.
