Jell-O is used in a variety of desserts.

From squirming stars to jiggly letters, Jell-O has been a staple of North American deserts for more than 100 years. Available in a powder of colored and flavored gelatin, Jell-O can be used for a variety of meals, from a base for desserts to a morning treat with fruit. When solidified, gelatin becomes firm, shiny and translucent, and can reflect light. To create a twist on the popular treat, create a Jell-O that lights up. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup tonic water
  • Small saucepan
  • 1 package blue Jell-O
  • Whisk
  • 1 cup tonic water, chilled
  • Pan
  • Cookie cutters (optional)
  • Black light bulbs

Instructions

    • 1

      Pour 1 cup tonic water into the small saucepan. Place it on the stove, and allow it to come to a rolling boil.

      Pour in the Jell-O package in to the hot tonic water. Whisk it thoroughly until they are evenly combined.

      Add the chilled tonic water to the Jell-O mix. Stir it until completely combined.

      Pour the mixture in to a pan. Insert it in to the refrigerator and allow it to set for at least two hours.

      Cut shapes out of the Jell-O using cookie cutters, if desired. Darken the room where the Jell-O will be served and replace the normal bulbs with black lights to make the gelatin shine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Any color of Jell-O can be used to create glow-in-the-dark treats; however, those that have blue in them light up brighter than others.
