How to Draw Funny Monsters

Plan your drawing. Use an HB pencil on a scrap of drawing paper to sketch rough ideas of what your want your monster to look like. Some monsters are round or oval shaped while others are long and rectangular. Allow your imagination to roam freely to get a basic idea of the shape you want your monster. Decide how many arms, legs, tails or other appendages you want your monster to have.

Fasten a piece of drawing paper to an easel and place it near a strong light source. Place your rough draft sketch near the easel for easy reference.

Draw the basic outline of your monster lightly with an HB pencil. Construct the body and appendages. Use basic shapes to block in each part of the monster's body.

Add a humorous face. Monsters are still funny when they have a confused, surprised or even angry look on their faces. The trick is to make the faces look cute instead of menacing. Big circles or ovals for eyes and extra-large lips and teeth or diminutive noses will help your monster look funny. Try using a combination of different sizes for facial shapes.

Create skin details. Ask yourself if your monster's skin is dry, scaly, slimy or smooth. Use your pencil to create detail on your monster's body. Cross-hatched marks can make your monster look dry, little water droplet shapes on your monster gives the illusion that it is slimy, and rough geometric shapes adds texture to your monster's skin. Sketch very lightly.

Add monster details. Draw in some horns, sketch in some wings or add claws to your monster. A monster can have any type of protrusion or growth, and those that are weighed down with many of them can look even more hilarious.

Go over your drawing with ink. Use a fine-tipped black pen to finalize your sketch, going over the pencil outline with the pen. Draw carefully to avoid unnecessary ink markings.

Color your monster. Use colored pencils, paint or felt-tipped markers to give your monster some character. Create shadows by using darker values of the hues you have chosen, saving the lighter hues for highlights.

Make your monster more human by drawing it in a basic human shape. Make it look funny by only sketching in one eye, a large set of teeth or adding a set of long arms.
