How to File an Addendum Through TurboTax

If you have already sent in your federal taxes, you can still file an addendum using form 1040X. This corrects errors you may have missed, either causing you to under- or over-pay on your taxes. Unfortunately, at least as of tax year 2010, you cannot e-file a 1040X addendum, but you can prepare it electronically with TurboTax. From there, you simply print and mail it.

Instructions

1. Open the tax form you wish to correct in TurboTax.

2. Click the "Federal Taxes" tab, then click "Other Tax Situations."

3. Click "Start or Update" next to "Amend a Return."

4. Click "Continue."

5. Check the box marked "Yes, I need to amend the [year] return I already filed," then click "Continue" again.

6. Fill out your addendum information. You must explain the reason for the change, and note what, if any, documents you will be including to make your case. Fill out payment information, if applicable. Click "Continue," when you are finished.

7. Click "Print Form" to print your addendum. Mail it, along with any supporting documents, to your local tax office. The address will be listed on the form.
