How to Replant a Mulberry Bush
Despite the infamous tune that sings, "Here we go round the mulberry bush," most mulberries are trees. The dwarf mulberry, however, is a shrub and is ideal for smaller landscapes where space is an issue. Other varieties, such as the black mulberry, grow more like a shrub in certain climates. The best time to replant, or transplant, a mulberry bush is in the fall right after leaf drop, but before the ground freezes, if applicable. You can also replant it in the spring, but in cooler climates, wait until the ground thaws. Does this Spark an idea?

Water your mulberry bush two or three days before replanting. Water under the entire canopy of the plant with 1 to 2 inches of water.

Prepare the new planting bed for your mulberry bush. Dig a hole that is 2 feet deep and wide. Incorporate a generous amount, up to 25 percent more, of compost or other organic matter into about two-thirds of the dug out soil.

Dig out the mulberry bush in the morning when it's most hydrated. Get under the root ball, digging around the bush about 15 to 24 inches deep and cut under the root ball. Lift the bush out of the soil. This job may require two people.

Fill the hole with the amended soil so your bush will be planted to the same depth as it was in the old location. Set the bush straight in the hole. Lightly pack in the rest of the hole with the amended soil and water the bush with 2 inches of water. Water it every week or two with 1 inch of water for the next couple of months. If transplanting it in the spring, keep it well watered in the summer as well.
