How to Get Rid of Exclamation Points in iTunes

Use DVDs to create a backup of your iTunes library.

Scrolling through the contents of your iTunes library, you may find a song or video with an exclamation point. These exclamation points indicate missing files and can occur when a purchase fails to download completely or when the file does not reside in the iTunes folder. Resuming the download process of previously purchased media files may resolve the issue. Otherwise, you must locate the file and move it to the iTunes folder if you want to rid iTunes of the exclamation point.

Instructions

Resume Purchased Downloads

1. Open the iTunes software.

2. Click "Store."

3. Click "Check for Available Downloads." This locates any purchases that did not download properly and starts the download process again.

Recover Lost Files

1. Open the iTunes software and click "Edit" and "Preferences." Then click the "Advanced" tab icon.

2. Click the check box beside "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder When Adding to Library" to select the option. Then click "OK" to return to iTunes.

3. Click "File," "Library" and "Organize Library."

4. Click the check box beside "Consolidate Files" to select the option. This places a copy of all your media files in the iTunes library. The original remains until you manually delete the file. Click "OK" to return to iTunes.

5. Connect your device to your computer and synchronize with iTunes.
