How to Create YouTube Mashups

The popularity of "mashups," directly juxtaposed elements of different sources of media, has risen with the accessibility of digital media and the simplicity of creating such videos or songs. YouTube is a popular hub for certain kinds of mashups; for example, a clip from a film with overdubbed audio from another film or a song not found in the original scene. You can make your own legal mashups of uploaded YouTube videos themselves, though, by using the YouTube Doubler, available freely on the Web.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the first YouTube video you want to use in your mashup. Pause the video.

    • 2

Press Ctrl + T to open a new tab in your Internet browser. Visit the second YouTube video you want to use for your mashup. Pause the video.

    • 3

Open a third browser tab. Visit the YouTube Doubler (youtubedoubler.com). Pause any videos that automatically play as the page loads.

    • 4

Select the entire URL of the first video from the address bar in your browser. Press Ctrl + C to copy the URL.

    • 5

Return to the YouTube Doubler and click the "First YouTube Video URL" field. Delete the current URL. Press Ctrl + P to paste your first video's URL in this field.

    • 6

Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the second video and its corresponding field.

    • 7

Click the "Double Up" button. Each of your videos will begin playing from the start. Pause the videos.

    • 8

Determine when each video needs to start to create the desired effect of your mashup. Enter these times (in seconds) into the indicated fields. For example, if you want a song from one video to begin playing at a specific moment in another video, you need to locate the exact time that moment starts.

    • 9

Click "Double Up" once again. You can share your mashup with the buttons located beneath the videos, or by copying and sharing the entire URL of the mashup's page.

Tips & Warnings

  • Create effective mashups by avoiding overly busy soundtracks in both videos. For example, if you want to play a song over another video, try to pick a scene or situation that doesn't already have music playing in the background.
