Embed a PDF on a page and password protect the page.

WordPress provides a few different content visibility settings for posts and pages. The first is the default "Public" setting that allows every visitor to view the content. "Private" only allows administrators and authors to read the content, but "Password protected" allows you to put a password prompt on the post or page in question. Add a PDF to a page and set it to require a password to protect your file.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to the WordPress dashboard from the wp-admin directory of your website. Navigate to "Pages" and click "Add New" to add a new page.

    • 2

Create your page and click the star-shaped icon next to "Upload/Insert" to upload and add your PDF file to the page. This will create a link to your PDF file.

    • 3

Click "Edit" next to "Visibility" in the "Publish" box. Select "password protected" and create a password. Click "OK" and publish the page.

    • 4

Access the PDF from the front of the website by visiting the page where the PDF exists. Input the password in the box and click "Submit" to see the entire post. Click the link to the PDF to load it in your browser.

Tips & Warnings

  • Install a membership system plugin if you want to give site visitors the ability to sign up and pay for access to PDF files on your website. Plugins also exist for creating free memberships.
