Using the extractor properly will help you achieve clearer skin.

Comedones are also known as "blackheads" or "whiteheads." They are hair follicles filled with dead skin, oil and bacteria. A closed comedo appears white and is also known as a whitehead. A blackhead is an open comedo that has gathered skin debris, which turns the tip black. Both types are unsightly. Even worse, they can lead to acne flareups of either pimples or cystic acne. Therefore, extracting the comedo before it erupts or becomes inflamed is a preventative measure that will ensure your skin's health. Professional extractions as part of facials or dermatological visits can be very expensive so, luckily, these extractions can be performed at home using a simple tool. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your face. Open your pores and soften the blackheads/whiteheads by steaming your face or taking a hot shower. You can also use a hot, wet washcloth and press it gently against your skin.

    • 2

Sanitize both your hands and the equipment. Wash your hands thoroughly with an antibacterial handwash for 30 seconds. Clean the comedo extractor by dipping it into rubbing alcohol.

    • 3

Position the extractor correctly. Your instrument may have different sides, so be sure to read the instructions. In general, if there are two ends, use the larger, flat loop for blackheads. The smaller loop is for whiteheads. Center the appropriate loop around the blackhead or whitehead you want to remove. Press down firmly but gently and slowly until the comedo starts to protrude. Continue to press until the comedo is extracted.

Avoid infections by applying an antibacterial cream or rubbing alcohol to your face. The extraction may have damaged your skin, even if it was not painful, and you must ensure the area is clean to stave off infection-causing bacteria. If the area is inflamed, apply a soothing cream or gel with aloe or eucalyptus, which are anti-inflammatory agents.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the comedo is not coming out, do not continue to press; you may damage your skin. You may need to open your pores and soften the blackheads/whiteheads again with another steam treatment. Pressing too hard can cause scarring.
