Potluck parties are an easy way for a hostess with a busy schedule to bring people together for a fun, causal party. They also provide guests with a wonderful opportunity to experience new flavor combinations and recipes they might not ordinarily try. Since the dishes are prepared in advance, more time can be devoted to socializing and enjoying the smorgasbord of culinary delights.       Cut a piece of paper in as many pieces as groups of guests are coming. For example, if you invited a husband and wife they count as one.

      Write a meal course on each piece of paper. This will include courses or food types such as an appetizer, entree, side, dessert or condiments. Choose the food types based on the theme of the party. Make a piece of paper for at least two entrees, four sides and two desserts per 10 guests.

      Put the pieces of paper in the bowl, bucket or hat and mix them around to evenly distribute. Make a list of the groups or names that will be coming and pick a course from the hat. Write the selected course next to a name as you go down the list. This makes the assignment process fair and unbiased.

      Distribute the list with the party theme and location information in an email, social networking site, phone call. Request that guests bring a serving utensil for their dish.

      Purchase enough plates, eating utensils, napkins, beverages and ice for your guests. Set a buffet table with the plates and utensils and make sure there is enough space for all of the dishes that will be at the party.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is customary for the host or hostess to supply beverages, ice, utensils, napkins and a few extra serving utensils, in case someone forgets. However, if you have a large group, suggest that each guest bring her own drink, especially if it is alcoholic, in order to cut down your cost.
