How to Draw a Garter Snake

The garter snake (not to be confused with a garden snake) is the state reptile of Massachusetts. While the bite of the garter snake is not often lethal to humans, its venom can be mildly toxic. Drawing a garter snake is easy. The basic technique is the same as drawing any snake. The colorings and markings you use are the elements that will distinguish your garter snake.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw an "S" shape horizontally across your paper. The shape can be as long as you want, depending upon how long you'd like to make your garter snake. Draw another line running along this one to form the body in its entirety. Taper one end of the two lines to a point. This will be the tail.

    • 2

Draw a head on the opposite end of the tail. The head for a garter snake, like other snakes that aren't highly poisonous, is more round than triangular. Draw an oval shape for the head, then draw two circles on this oval for the eyes.

    • 3

Draw horizontal lines running the length of your snake's body. The garter snake comes in a variety of colors, but the single-most important feature of this type of snake is the lines running the length of the body, typically in alternating dark and light color.

    • 4

Color your garter snake. Colors appropriate to the garter snake include light and dark green, yellow, gray and black. Color the stripes green, alternating between the light and dark. Blend some yellow and black along the belly of the snake.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using a picture can help you visualize the coloring and texture of your snake.

  • Experiment with different poses. Rather than have your snake slithering, draw the body in layered loops for a coiled snake. Once you've gotten the basics of your snake's looks down, changing its position is easy enough.
