How to Furnish a Den

Fill your den with cozy and visually appealing furniture.

The den was a room previously designated for the man of the house to relax. Today, many modern families utilize den space for accommodating guests or enjoying family time without using the furniture in the formal living room. There are several furniture pieces that can make the den both comfortable and chic, so your friends and loved ones will feel at ease in the color-coordinated or decoratively themed space.

Instructions

1. Place a sectional sofa in the den if space permits. This ensures your loved ones can sit comfortably when you're having family game night or enjoying a movie. Since this would likely be the largest piece of furniture in the room, choosing a sectional in a neutral shade like cocoa brown or slate gray is ideal, so you can adorn the furniture with colorful throw pillows.

2. Add a plush reclining chair in the corner of the den. This can serve as the favorite chair for the oldest family member or as additional seating for guests. A neutral color is ideal for the recliner as well, although you can also choose a chair in a bright hue that matches the sectional sofa's throw pillows, such as indigo, burgundy or turquoise.

3. Purchase a futon for the den if the space is used to accommodate overnight guests. Choose a futon that folds into a sofa so it can double as additional seating. A futon is a suitable choice if the den is particularly small and a sectional sofa is impractical. Accent the futon with throw pillows for a pop of color and to keep the den looking polished.

4. Add bean bags in hues that match the den's decor. These "chairs" don't take up too much space, and make the den space appear casual and relaxing.

5. Accessorize the den. Complete the room's look by adding curtains to provide refinement, along with wall art like enlarged photos of family and friends in gold or silver frames. If the den has hardwood floors, add an area rug to the center of the space to lend texture and an eye-catching pattern to the room.
