How to Replace a Door Lock on a 2001 Cavalier
The door lock in the 2001 Cavalier actuates the locking mechanism inside the door latch assembly by using a rod to push or pull the actuating lever. Over time the lock cylinder and latch assembly will wear to the point they no longer function and require replacement. Individual door locks are available, but it is a good idea to replace the door locks as a set so that only one key is required to open either door.

1
Roll the window up completely. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery using an 8 mm wrench. Lay the cable aside so it cannot make accidental contact with the battery post. This will prevent unwanted voltage spikes in the Cavalier's electrical system during the repair.
-
2
Remove the screw that attaches the side mirror trim cover to the door frame, using a small Phillips screwdriver. Pull the trim cover away from the door frame and remove the small Allen-head screw that secures the mirror's directional control knob. Slid the control knob out of the trim cover and lay the trim cover aside.

3
Remove the two arm rest screws and four lower door panel screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Slide a retaining clip tool behind the door panel, and pry the door panel retainers loose from the door frame. Pull out on the panel to fully release the retaining clips from the door.
-
4
Pull out on the bottom edge of the door panel and slide the panel up to remove it from the top of the door frame. Unplug the electrical connectors for the power window and power door lock switches from inside the door panel. Lay the door panel aside.

5
Rotate the lock rod retaining clip to unsnap it from the lock rod. Pull the rod from the lock lever. Pull the door lock retaining clip, which attaches the lock assembly to the outside of the door, from the lock using a pliers.
-
6
Slip the old lock from the door by pulling it through the outside door skin. Slip the new lock into the door and replace the retaining clip. Reinstall the lock rod into the lock rod retaining clip and rotate the retaining clip until it snaps onto the lock rod. Plug the electrical connectors back into the switch assemblies.
-
7
Operate the door lock using the new key several times to verify it actuates the door lock before reinstalling the inside door panel. Slip the door panel onto the top of the door frame, and position the retaining clips on the back of the panel over the holes in the door frame. Push the door firmly against the door frame to secure the retaining clips to the door.
-
8
Reinstall the door panel retaining screws. Reinstall the outside mirror directional control into the trim cover and reinstall the trim cover. Repeat the procedure for the remaining door. Reinstall the negative battery cable, and verify the power door locks work properly.
